Escafeld Chorale - The Christmas Story in Words and Music

Image

Saturday 11th December 2021 at 7.30 pm

Once again, Escafeld Chorale, a mixed-voice choir based in Sheffield, will present a Christmas concert in Wentworth Church. Last year, the concert could not take place due to covid restrictions, but that is the only year to be missed since 1994.

This year’s concert will take place on Saturday, 11th December at 7.30 pm and will comprise the usual mix of choir music, readings, and carols for the audience to join in. Unfortunately we shall not be serving refreshments this year due to the hazards of spreading coronavirus, so you will miss mulled wine and mince pies! Perhaps next year . . .

Tickets will be available from early November from Roy Smalley (phone 01909 560795) in church on Sunday mornings, and also from Wentworth Post Office. They will cost £8.00 in advance, or you can pay at the door, but it will then cost £9.00. A programme is included.

Come and enjoy some lovely Christmas music in a beautiful warm and welcoming church. You won’t regret it!!

The York Waits - Ancient Music for the Festive Season

York WaitsSunday 5th December 2021 at 3.30pm

The York Waits .

The York Waits take their name from the ancient city band of York, the earliest evidence for which we find in 14th century records. Before they turned to music full time the waits had been night watchmen and, although their guard duties diminished, they continued to keepe the night watches in the weeks leading up to Christmas, playing at various points to mark the hours and wake the citizens. In York as in many towns, they were employed by the Lord Mayor as the city’s own band of musicians, paid and liveried by the corporation to play on public occasions. The band is known to have been in continuous existence for at least five hundred years until abolition in 1836.

Today’s York Waits have revived the band as it was in its heyday in the 16th century, playing a wide repertoire of period European music as well as their own arrangements of popular dance and ballad tunes.

A wonderful opportunity not to be missed.

Tickets cost £12 (£10 concessions) and are available from Wentworth Post Office in early November or by calling 01226 744084.

Christmas Concerts 2020.

Just a little rather sad update on our Christmas Concerts

I'm sure that it is of no surprise that both the Escafeld and York Waits concerts have to be cancelled this year. I know that the Escafeld have been practicing remotely, the plan is for them to sing at Christmas outdoors, presumably around Sheffield.

I asked York Waites if they would like to pass on a message via our database.

New Organist and Choirmaster

The Parochial Church Council are delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Chris Viney DipSAA as Organist and Choir Master.

We are extremely fortunate to welcome Chris into our church family. Chris has many years of experience in church music and has given numerous diverse concerts and organ recitals.

We are confident that Chris will add to the rich musical heritage of Holy Trinity Wentworth and we give him a very warm welcome.
